End Unlawful Detention In the news

Gurpreet Singh Johal calls on UK to seek his brother’s release

Jagtar Singh Johal has been found not guilty of all charges in one of nine cases against him after a court in Moga, Punjab, rejected the allegations against hi, on the basis that no credible evidence had been presented.

Reprieve’s deputy executive director Dan Dolan told Channel 4 News that “the remaining eight cases against him should be dropped, and Jagtar set free.”

Both Jagtar’s brother and his MP Douglas McAllister have called on the UK Government to seek his release.

“Without decisive diplomatic action, he faces being imprisoned for decades while the remaining trials drag on, despite the complete lack of credible evidence against him,” McAllister said.

Before he was abducted and tortured by the Punjab police, UK intelligence agencies are accused of tipping off Indian authorities about Jagtar.
