Ali Kololo has conviction overturned at Kenyan High Court

The BBC reports on the exoneration of Kenyan man Ali Kololo over the murder of UK tourist David Tebbutt, after previously being sentenced to death on the false charges. Jude Tebbutt, the wife of David Tebbutt, said she was ‘overjoyed’ to see Ali Kololo released, after campaigning for his release alongside organisations like Reprieve.

Maya Foa, Director of Reprieve, said it was “a tragedy that it took so long to reach this point”, adding: “Ali Kololo’s trial was one of the most unfair imaginable. The imbalance of power in the courtroom was staggering, between the senior Metropolitan Police detective testifying for the prosecution and the illiterate defendant, being tried in a language he did not understand, without the aid of a lawyer for most of the trial.”

Reprieve’s petition to secure Ali Kololo’s release was signed by over 11,000 supporters.
