Despite horrific first nitrogen execution, Alabama says it will continue with method

Alabama has offered other US states planning to carry out nitrogen gas executions assistance, and at the same time promised that more asphyxiation executions will take place, Reuters reports.

Human rights groups have called this method cruel and torturous – the latest effort, like lethal injection, to hide the brutal reality of the death penalty.

Reprieve’s executive director Maya Foa said: “The whole purpose of these methods is to hide pain. How many more prisoners must die agonising deaths before we see executions for what they really are: the state violently taking a human life?”
