The Guardian reports that a group of celebrities, including Gillian Anderson, Stanley Tucci, Stephen Fry, and Olivia Colman, have called on ministers to bring home the approximately 25 British families stuck in North-East Syria.
The stars, along with Reprieve, national security experts, and other NGOs, signed an open letter to the UK government requesting the return of the abandoned nationals, including an estimated 60 children, who have been detained in dangerous conditions since 2019.
“These British families have been abandoned by their government and live in squalid conditions where they are exposed daily to life-threatening violence, disease and other deprivations,” the letter says. “Young British boys and girls are growing up in this dangerous environment with very limited access to education, sufficient food, clean water and shelter and medical care.”
