Leave a gift in your Will to Reprieve
“I was very happy [to be released]. It felt like I had been born again. It was as if God had revealed a new world for me. I was so overjoyed to be in a place where I was born; my home.”
– Ishmael, former Reprieve client in Malawi
Justice for the long haul
Reprieve’s fight for justice is not quick or easy. It takes years – sometimes decades – to overturn death sentences, stop torture and hold powerful governments to account. A gift in your Will ensures that our work can continue, protecting people from state-sanctioned abuses long into the future and working towards a world where no one is facing a death penalty.
Your legacy, their future

Around the world, people are still facing the death penalty, torture, unlawful detention, and targeted killing- often with no one to defend them. Since 1999, Reprieve’s lawyers, campaigners, and investigators have stopped over 600 executions. Our work has also contributed to the abolition of the death penalty around the world. But the fight is far from over. Your legacy could change that.
A gift that opens doors to justice
Your legacy gift will:
- Defend people facing the death penalty and end its use.
- Expose and challenge torture, unlawful detention, and secret prisons.
- Stand against abuses of power and hold governments to account.
Your support will mean that, no matter what challenges come next, Reprieve will stand strong, uphold human rights, challenge unjust laws and ensure the fight for justice continues, beyond your lifetime. With your support, we can continue making progress to a world where no one faces human rights abuses or a death sentence at the hands of powerful governments.
Justice takes time. But with your help, it will come.
How can I include Reprieve in my Will?
Writing or amending your Will can feel like a daunting or scary process, but it can give you peace of mind and will mean your loved ones are cared for according to your wishes.
After you have looked after your friends and family, it also gives you an opportunity to help Reprieve to fight for justice for people facing extreme human rights abuses for years to come.
If you would like to include a gift to Reprieve in your Will, you can do so in the way that is best for you and your loved ones. Your donation will also be free from inheritance tax, and you can read more about inheritance tax here.
There are three types of gift you can leave:
- A residuary gift- this is a share of, or the remainder of your estate once you have taken care of loved ones
- A pecuniary gift – a fixed amount of money of any size
- A specific gift- a particular item like a property

Updating or amending your Will
We always recommend you consult a lawyer or a solicitor if you have questions on your Will. A solicitor can also help you with wording and other services.
If you decide to include a gift to Reprieve, your solicitor can advise you on the appropriate wording.
Do you have any sample wording I can use in my Will?
We recommend that you speak to your lawyer or solicitor about the most appropriate wording for your own Will.
Your lawyer or solicitor may use this sample wording as a guideline:
“I wish to leave a gift to Reprieve, registered charity number: 1114900, Reprieve, PO Box 78292, London, E1W 9SS [XX% of my estate] or [specific amount]. The receipt of the Executive Director or other duly authorised officer of the Charity shall be a good and sufficient discharge to my executors.“
Adding Reprieve to your existing will
You can add Reprieve to your existing Will, and your solicitor can advise on the best way to do this
