The Home Office has apologised to a Bahraini activist after he was detained for over two hours last year at Gatwick airport, told him his detention was unlawful and offered him hundreds of pounds in compensation.
Torture survivor and human rights defender Sayed Ahmed Alwadei has indefinite leave to remain in the UK but his application for citizenship has been delayed. He thought the airport stop was related to a UK-Bahrain deal signed last summer.
“I have been a very critical voice in relation to exposing human rights violations in Bahrain,” Alwadei said. “I believe this is coming at a personal cost.” Read the full story at BBC News.
