Supreme Court refuses to hear Shamima Begum’s citizenship-stripping appeal

Judges have ruled that Shamima Begum cannot appeal against the government’s decision to remove her British citizenship despite the fact that she is likely a child trafficking victim and made effectively stateless by the Home Secretary’s decision.

She has been unlawfully detained for five years in North East Syria in horrendous conditions.

“Exiling British nationals like Ms Begum is about politics, not the law,” Reprieve’s joint executive director Maya Foa said in a statement that was picked up by the BBC, the Times, the Guardian and Mail Online, among others.

“The prior government’s failed do-nothing approach must be abandoned. Our politicians should take responsibility and repatriate the small number of British families in this position so their cases can be dealt with here in Britain.”
