Botched execution called off in Alabama

The New York Times reports on Alabama calling off the execution of Kenneth Eugene Smith after struggling to insert intravenous lines and running out of time before his death warrant expired at midnight.

“The recent spate of disastrous lethal injection executions have shown that whatever the drug, whatever the protocol, condemned prisoners often spend their final hours in agonizing pain and distress,” said Director of Reprieve US Maya Foa.
