Tanzania: Ghati Mwita has spent 15 years behind bars with no evidence against her

In 2008 Ghati Mwita was sentenced to death at the Tanzanian Supreme Court. Authorities says she murdered a local fisherman. Ghati says his death was an accident.

For 15 years, Ghati has been detained in Butimba Central Prison where conditions are extremely poor. She does not have regular access to medication and is occasionally suicidal, reports Chanzo.

Ghati has applied for a presidential pardon four times and has not been granted one and has even taken her case to the African court. In September Ghati will be 66, the average life expectancy in Tanzania, and should be released so she can be at home with her family.
