{"id":9151,"date":"2018-05-15T12:49:43","date_gmt":"2018-05-15T16:49:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/reprieve.org\/?p=9151"},"modified":"2020-12-04T10:16:37","modified_gmt":"2020-12-04T10:16:37","slug":"latest-gina-haspel-major-victory-fight-torture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reprieve.org\/us\/2018\/05\/15\/latest-gina-haspel-major-victory-fight-torture\/","title":{"rendered":"The latest on Gina Haspel and a major victory in our fight against torture"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Some big news from the Reprieve family:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A victory in our ongoing challenge to the&nbsp;CIA\u2019s &#8216;War on Terror&#8217; era torture and rendition program &#8211; and exposure of&nbsp;the UK Government&#8217;s complicity in it.&nbsp;<strong>The British Prime Minister, Theresa May, has offered an unprecedented apology to Abdul-Hakim Belhaj and Fatima Boudchar for her government&#8217;s role in their abduction, torture, and rendition to Libya in 2004.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Abdul-Hakim, a prominent opponent of the Gaddafi dictatorship, and Fatima were both were kidnapped, tortured at a CIA black site and delivered back to the Libyan regime.&nbsp;Fatima was pregnant at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI\u2019ll never forget the sight of my kidnappers, dressed all in black and wearing ski masks, waiting for me in a white cell in the Bangkok detention site. [\u2026] A man grabbed my head and shoved me into a truck. They blindfolded and trussed me. [\u2026] I have no idea how long I was in the Thai secret prison because no one would let me sleep. The cell was white and stark, with nothing in it but a camera and hooks on the wall. The masked abductors were waiting. I was terrified. They chained me to the hooks. Because I was midway through my pregnancy, I could barely move or sit.&#8221;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em>&#8211; Fatima describing her abuse at a CIA blacksite&nbsp;<a title=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/05\/08\/opinion\/gina-haspel-questions-cia.html?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=reprieve&amp;utm_content=2+-+in+The+New+York+Times&amp;utm_campaign=Round-Up-Gina-Haspel-Belhaj&amp;source=Round-Up-Gina-Haspel-Belhaj\" href=\"https:\/\/secure.reprieve.org\/page\/m\/-305bf02c\/4d10b73\/261bd9d1\/17a37ad5\/793787327\/VEsE\/\">in The New York Times<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This apology for what they went through represents real justice for Abdul-Hakim and Fatima &#8211;&nbsp;<strong>and draws into sharper focus the impending promotion of Gina Haspel, who we know oversaw a CIA blacksite in Thailand. &nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Haspel, President Trump&#8217;s nomination to run the CIA, evaded difficult questions in her confirmation hearing last week&nbsp;about the depth of her involvement in CIA torture &#8211; and her personal views on the enhanced interrogation program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a title=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/voices\/trump-gina-haspel-cia-director-senate-confirmation-waterboarding-torture-a8343806.html?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=reprieve&amp;utm_content=3+-+Writing+in+The+Independent&amp;utm_campaign=Round-Up-Gina-Haspel-Belhaj&amp;source=Round-Up-Gina-Haspel-Belhaj\" href=\"https:\/\/secure.reprieve.org\/page\/m\/-305bf02c\/4d10b73\/261bd9d1\/17a37ad4\/793787327\/VEsF\/\">Writing in The Independent<\/a>, Eric Lewis, President of Reprieve US, highlighted why this matters, and what Congress and the Supreme Court must now do to prevent the torture of detainees in future:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;It is, of course, highly troubling that Trump would nominate Haspel to head an agency that has tortured in the past.&nbsp;It is even more troubling that no binding law prevents any head of any agency from ordering foreign detainees from being tortured.
