Bush in 2002 in the aftermath of the September 11th attacks. It is located at a US military base on Cuba.<\/p>\n
It was said that the prisoners were the “worst of the worst”<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 men so dangerous that an offshore facility was needed to detain and interrogate them.<\/p>\n The US government sought to create a legal black hole, where neither US nor international law applied. The administration claimed that the detainees were not covered by the US Constitution because they were not on US soil, and that their \u201cenemy combatant\u201d status meant they could be denied legal protections.<\/p>\n On 11 January 2002, the first detainees arrived, hooded, shackled and terrified, at Guant\u00e1namo. Since then, Guant\u00e1namo has become a symbol for injustice and torture.[\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”20″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1\/1″ tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_custom_heading text=”Are the detainees really the \u2018worst of the worst\u2019?” use_theme_fonts=”yes”][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”20″][vc_column_text]More detainees have died in Guant\u00e1namo than have been convicted of any crime. As it turned out, the \u2018worst of the worst\u2019 claim did not stand up, and the US began to release the those who had been rounded up and sent there.<\/p>\n At least 15 children were held. The majority of detainees were never even charged with a crime, let alone convicted of one. In all, of the\u00a0780\u00a0prisoners who have been though Guant\u00e1namo\u2019s gates,\u00a0729\u00a0have now been released, with only only 4 being convicted.<\/p>\n But still 41 detainees remain there. For many detainees, the torture began while they were detained in CIA Black Sites before being taken to\u00a0Guant\u00e1namo.<\/p>\n In a 2006 report, the UN Committee Against Torture stated that the United States should end detention at at\u00a0Guant\u00e1namo\u00a0and \u201ctake immediate measures to eradicate all forms of torture and ill-treatment of detainees.\u201d Further, it said that the United States “should rescind any interrogation technique \u2013 including methods involving sexual humiliation, \u2018water boarding,\u2019 \u2018short shackling\u2019 and using dogs to induce fear\u2026”<\/p>\n Many international bodies have denounced the treatment of detainees at\u00a0Guant\u00e1namo. The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in its Resolution 1433 concluded that \u2018many if not all detainees have been subjected to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment occurring as a direct result of official policy.\u2019<\/p>\n The main conclusion of the US Senate\u2019s 2014 probe into torture was that it \u201cwas not an effective means of acquiring intelligence.\u201d But Donald Trump has said he would like to bring “back waterboarding, and I\u2019d bring back a hell of a lot worse than waterboarding\u2026 Don\u2019t tell me it doesn\u2019t work\u2014torture works\u2026 if it doesn\u2019t work, they deserve it anyway, for what they\u2019re doing to us. We have to fight fire with fire.\u201d[\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”20″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1\/1″ tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_custom_heading text=”Why hasn\u2019t Guant\u00e1namo been closed?” use_theme_fonts=”yes”][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”20″][vc_column_text]<\/a><\/p>\n Despite widespread condemnation, legal challenges and public pressure,\u00a0Guant\u00e1namo\u00a0has now operated for 16 years, through 4 presidential terms (now in its 5th).<\/p>\n Shortly after his inauguration in 2009, President Obama signed an executive order to close\u00a0Guant\u00e1namo\u00a0within one year, calling it a \u201csad chapter in American history.”<\/em>\u00a0But he succeeded only in reducing the number of detainees from 245 to 41.<\/p>\n Despite it\u2019s widespread human rights abuses and terrible record of locking up the wrong people, some still refuse to admit that\u00a0Guant\u00e1namo\u00a0has been a complete disaster.<\/p>\n Since his election in 2016, President Trump has promised to keep the\u00a0 Guant\u00e1namo\u00a0<\/strong>open and load it up with \u201cbad dudes<\/em>.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
