A former Afghan militant who is one of the last 40 detainees held at the prison at Guant\u00e1namo Bay, Cuba, asked a U.S. judge for his freedom on Monday, arguing that President Biden\u2019s recent troop withdrawal<\/a> announcement amounted to a declaration that the U.S. war in Afghanistan is ending and that all prisoners of said war should be released.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Afghan government in February called Gul\u2019s continuing detention \u201cdetrimental\u201d to U.S.-Afghan relations, marking what appears to be the first time a Guant\u00e1namo detainee\u2019s government has formally demanded repatriation in U.S. court. Gul\u2019s case compromised \u201ccompliance with the letter and spirit of two different peace accords,\u201d counting a February 2020 U.S.-Taliban agreement, the Afghan government said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
