Guant\u00e1namo Bay is an illegal prison camp that should never have existed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yet it remains open to this day. 40 men are still held there; 28 without charge or trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Since it was opened in 2002, nearly 800 men have been held at Guant\u00e1namo. All were subject to extraordinary rendition and many were tortured at CIA-run black sites around the world – often with the complicity of US allies, including the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reprieve led the fight to the US Supreme Court for access to the men held at Guant\u00e1namo when it first opened, and we were one of the very first organizations allowed inside. Since then, we have secured freedom for more than 80 men illegally detained without charge or trial \u2013 more than any other organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Our unique ‘Life after Guant\u00e1namo’ project gives vital support to former detainees and their families all over the world once they have been released. It focuses on men who are resettled in host countries due to the threat of torture or persecution they would face in their home countries. Our aim is to facilitate access to a range of multidisciplinary services to help each former detainee get back on his feet\u2014from specialized torture rehabilitation services to job assistance and social support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
