A top investigative journalist in Kenya fears that British-backed police have placed him on their \u201ckill list\u201d, making him a \u201cdead man walking\u201d.<\/p>\n

Mohammed \u2018Moha\u2019 Ali, 35, has spent years exposing extra-judicial killings by Kenya\u2019s Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU).<\/p>\n

He also revealed Western involvement in the murders, including the identification of targets for the so-called \u201ckill list\u201d.<\/p>\n

Now Ali fears the elite\u00a0security force is trying to silence him.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor years, the US and the UK have been running their own unaccountable \u2018Kill Lists\u2019 under the guise of the failed \u2018War on Terror\u2019. Now their partners are following in their footsteps, and with their support. The result is hundreds of civilians murdered by \u2018kill squads\u2019 \u2013 funded and equipped with UK money. Mohammed Ali now finds himself in the crosshairs of these security forces, all because he alerted British taxpayers to the role their government was playing in funding these unaccountable units. Theresa May and Boris Johnson must ensure their Kenyan counter-parts call off their death squad and take Moha\u2019s name off the kill list.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reprieve has written to Downing Street, urging the Prime Minister to protect Ali, stop funding Kenya\u2019s security forces and undertake a review of UK assistance.<\/p>\n

Ali worked as chief investigations editor at the TV channel KTN, until he was forced out by government pressure earlier this week.<\/p>\n

Previous death threats\u00a0have forced Mohammed Ali and his family into hiding and even caused him to flee the country.<\/p>\n

The Al Jazeera Documentary\u00a0Inside Kenya\u2019s Death Squads<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>prompted Kenya\u2019s police chief to warn Ali that the authorities will \u201ccome for you, we will deal with you firmly.\u201d<\/p>\n

At least 262 extra-judicial killings by Kenya\u2019s security forces have been\u00a0reported<\/a>since the start of 2015.<\/p>\n

Despite the US suspending its support for the ATPU over human rights concerns, British backing for the police squad continues.<\/p>\n

The Foreign Office told\u00a0Parliament<\/a>\u00a0in February 2017 that its support for the ATPU includes equipment, \u201ccapacity building in investigative skills, operations management, forensics and evidence recovery as well as infrastructure.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ali\u2019s reports have suggested the UK support may also include sharing intelligence and the identification of targets.<\/p>\n
