{"id":8993,"date":"2016-12-14T11:19:38","date_gmt":"2016-12-14T11:19:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.reprieve.org.uk\/?page_id=8993"},"modified":"2020-05-29T15:17:38","modified_gmt":"2020-05-29T15:17:38","slug":"death-row-brit-goes-2-years-without-phone-call-london-family","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reprieve.org\/uk\/2016\/12\/14\/death-row-brit-goes-2-years-without-phone-call-london-family\/","title":{"rendered":"Death-row Brit goes 2 years without phone call to London family"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"header_block\">Andy Tsege, a British dad on death row in Ethiopia, has gone two years without a phone call to his family in London.<\/p>\n<p>Andy last spoke to his partner and three children on 14th\u00a0December 2014.\u00a0His family say that the rare phone call came out of the blue and lasted only a few minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, guards at Kality prison, which has been dubbed &#8216;<em>Ethiopia&#8217;s Gulag<\/em>&#8216;, have heavily restricted Andy\u2019s contact with the outside world.<\/p>\n<p>He is held under an unlawful sentence of death in Ethiopia, after he was kidnapped and rendered to the country in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Andy\u00a0is a well-known critic of the Ethiopian ruling party, and he was sentenced to death\u00a0in absentia\u00a0in 2009 while he was living in London.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"btn button\" href=\"https:\/\/reprieve.bsd.net\/page\/s\/andy-tsege-official-register\">Sign here to demand Andy&#8217;s release<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAndy has had no contact with his family in the UK for over two years. Having been kidnapped from an international airport and rendered to Ethiopia\u2019s Gulag in June of 2014, Andy has languished on death row ever since. Andy\u2019s nine-year-old twins are facing another Christmas without their father at home. It is shocking that the British and Ethiopian governments cannot organise something as basic as regular phone calls for Andy\u2019s family.\u201d<br \/>\n<strong><em>Maya Foa, a director of Reprieve<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reprieve.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/2015_10_20_PUB-Web-Banner-Andy-with-Kids.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6277\" src=\"http:\/\/www.reprieve.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/2015_10_20_PUB-Web-Banner-Andy-with-Kids.jpg\" alt=\"2015_10_20_PUB Web Banner Andy with Kids\" width=\"600\" height=\"334\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Foreign Office recently lost consular contact with him for a fortnight, amid reports that he was \u2018in fear for his life.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Foreign Office minister Tobias Ellwood\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theyworkforyou.com\/wrans\/?id=2016-11-17.53667.h&amp;s=Tsege\">told Parliament last month<\/a>\u00a0that, \u201c<em>As part of our ongoing consular support to Mr Tsege, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office has made representations to the Ethiopian Government requesting that he be given access to a telephone<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andy requested a phone call with his family at his last consular visit over a month ago.
