The Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, confirmed that he raised the case of Jagtar Singh Johal with his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi when they met on the sidelines of a tech conference in Mumbai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier he told travelling journalists he had “not forgotten” Jagtar, who remains arbitrarily detained in an Indian prison, despite being acquitted in the first case against him to reach a verdict earlier this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The PM also confirmed that the new Foreign Secretary, Yvette Cooper, will soon meet Jagtar’s family plus a representative from Reprieve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Johal\u2019s elder brother, Gurpreet Singh Johal, said: \u201cTwo days ago, the Prime Minister said he hadn\u2019t forgotten Jagtar, but today, he didn\u2019t even mention his name. That is hard to take.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe lack of detail and the lack of progress is extremely disappointing for the family \u2013 especially Jagtar\u2019s wife who will spend her eighth wedding anniversary without her husband.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI will meet the Foreign Secretary next month and hopefully agree a plan of action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn the meantime I guess we just have to hope that when the Prime Minister says that he\u2019s raising Jagtar\u2019s case, that means he\u2019s working to get him home. It would be shattering if this turns out to be more empty talk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
