{"id":24597,"date":"2025-10-06T11:54:27","date_gmt":"2025-10-06T11:54:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/reprieve.org\/uk\/?p=24597"},"modified":"2025-10-06T11:55:00","modified_gmt":"2025-10-06T11:55:00","slug":"bring-jagtar-home-nazanin-and-alaas-families-tell-pm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reprieve.org\/uk\/2025\/10\/06\/bring-jagtar-home-nazanin-and-alaas-families-tell-pm\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Bring Jagtar home,&#8221; Nazanin and Alaa&#8217;s families tell PM."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The families of other arbitrarily detained Britons have written to the Prime Minister, urging him to seek human rights activist Jagtar Singh Johal&#8217;s release on his trip to India this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn almost eight years and hundreds of court hearings, prosecutors have supplied no credible evidence against Jagtar,&#8221; they wrote. &#8220;In the first case against him to reach a verdict, in March 2025, Jagtar was acquitted of all charges by the Moga district court in Punjab. The court found the prosecution had \u2018miserably failed\u2019 to prove its case and rejected all the allegations against him\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe eight essentially duplicate cases against Jagtar violate the \u2018double jeopardy\u2019 principle that protects people from being put on trial more than once for the same crime, enshrined in both international and Indian law.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The letter was signed by Mona and Sanaa Seif, sisters of Alaa Abd el-Fattah; Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe; her husband, Richard Ratcliffe; Matthew Hedges and his partner, Daniela Tejada. Abd el-Fattah\u2019s cousin Omar Robert Hamilton, one of the lead coordinators of the Free Alaa campaign, is also a signatory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIndia\u2019s National Investigation Agency courts often take decades to reach a verdict.
