{"id":23458,"date":"2024-10-06T10:37:46","date_gmt":"2024-10-06T10:37:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/reprieve.org\/uk\/?p=23458"},"modified":"2024-10-21T14:05:29","modified_gmt":"2024-10-21T14:05:29","slug":"saudi-arabia-bids-for-a-seat-on-the-un-hrc-as-child-defendants-suffer-on-death-row","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reprieve.org\/uk\/2024\/10\/06\/saudi-arabia-bids-for-a-seat-on-the-un-hrc-as-child-defendants-suffer-on-death-row\/","title":{"rendered":"Saudi Arabia bids for a seat on the UN HRC as child defendants suffer on death row"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Saudi Arabia is bidding for a seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council on 9 October despite presiding over a <a href=\"https:\/\/reprieve.org\/uk\/2024\/05\/09\/british-cultural-institutions-accused-of-art-washing-saudi-arabias-human-rights-abuses\/\">human rights crisis<\/a>, including an alarming rise in the number of executions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just one week before the vote Saudi Arabia surpassed its own record for number of executions in a calendar year, previously 196 in 2022, making 2024 the bloodiest on record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several <a href=\"https:\/\/reprieve.org\/uk\/2024\/05\/17\/uk-government-opposes-child-executions-cameron-tells-lords\/\">child <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/reprieve.org\/uk\/2024\/05\/17\/uk-government-opposes-child-executions-cameron-tells-lords\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">defendants<\/a> are on death row at risk of being caught up in this execution spree, <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/saudi-arabia-bids-human-rights-spot-breaks-annual\/story?id=114342390\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reports ABC News.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We know that at least one person has been executed since [2020] for a crime committed when he was a child,&#8221; Reprieve&#8217;s Head of Death Penalty for MENA Basyouni said. &#8220;And we know of three other people on death row now for childhood crimes.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s Mohammed bin Salman &#8212; he is running the show, he makes the decisions,&#8221; she adds. &#8220;All laws must go through him.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;He has a very controlling hand in the death sentences that are coming down Saudi Arabia and the execution numbers that are going up.
