Ahmed Rabanni is an artist formerly detained in Guant\u00e1namo Bay.<\/strong> He was wrongly detained in Guant\u00e1namo Bay for more than 20 years<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

Ahmed was locked up for over 20 years without charge or trial. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was kidnapped in 2002 and sent to Guant\u00e1namo Bay in September 2004. All of Ahmed\u2019s art was produced from inside the prison. Ahmed was cleared for release in October 2021 and as of February 2023, Ahmed is a free man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who is Ahmed Rabbani?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In October 2021, Ahmed was cleared for release from Guant\u00e1namo Bay after being locked up for almost 20 years without charge or trial. It wasn\u2019t until February X 2023, that he was sent home back to Pakistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ahmed is a Rohingya Muslim and was a taxi driver in Pakistan. He was kidnapped in 2002. Despite having done nothing wrong, Ahmed was taken to Afghanistan and tortured in CIA custody for 545 days. He was then sent to Guant\u00e1namo Bay in 2004.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His wife was pregnant at the time and just five months later she gave birth to their son, Jawad Rabbani. Jawad has never met his father. He is now 17 years old, he studies in Karachi and can only occasionally speak to his dad on the phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Details of Ahmed\u2019s torture were made public in 2012 when the United States\u2019 Senate Torture Report was published.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Life inside Guant\u00e1namo Bay<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is no real support system in Guant\u00e1namo Bay \u2013 despite them enduring long term imprisonment, solitary confinement and torture. Although the conditions in Guant\u00e1namo Bay have improved over the years, many detainees are traumatized and suffer from physical ailments induced by torture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many, there is just one solace \u2013 art.<\/p>\n\n\n

Art inside Guant\u00e1namo<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Art can be a powerful tool for people who have been traumatized \u2013 allowing them to express themselves and process their experiences.

In much of the work produced by Ahmed, we can see that his paintbrush often transports him to his life outside of Guant\u00e1namo \u2013 a prison camp where he never should have been. He paints warm and peaceful open spaces, with canopies of grapevines and blue skies.<\/p>\n\n\n

Sadly, much of the art produced by current prisoners is never seen by the outside world. This is because the release of the artwork is currently barred by the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sabry al-Qurashi<\/a>, a Yemeni national and artist, was the first person to be released from Guant\u00e1namo Bay with all of his artworks. Sabry\u2019s art explicitly depicts the pain and suffering endured inside Guant\u00e1namo Bay. Ahmed\u2019s art showing his own torture has never been released. Here is an example of Sabry\u2019s powerful work:<\/p>\n\n\n

Since 2013, Ahmed has undertaken a series of hunger strikes in a peaceful protest at his indefinite detention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not all the artworks created by Ahmed and which have been released from Guant\u00e1namo follow a soothing and nostalgic narrative. As we can see through his piece \u201cLooking at the Moon\u201d which was painted in 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n

Ahmed was cleared for release in October 2021, and he was released in February 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is Guant\u00e1namo Bay?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guant\u00e1namo Bay was designed to act as a legal black hole. It should never have existed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet it remains open to this day. 32 men are still held there; 21without charge or trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reprieve is fighting to free the men who remain in Guant\u00e1namo and to close the prison camp for good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
