An unaccompanied\u00a0British child has been repatriated from a detention camp in North East Syria,\u00a0it has been reported. Reprieve estimates that there are\u00a0\u200ba total of\u00a014 British adult women detained in the camps\u00a0\u200balong with their children. There are an estimated 8\u00a0British men also held in prisons in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The UK government is currently refusing to repatriate \u200bthe small number of British women who are held with their children in the camps in North East Syria. This refusal stands in stark contrast to the actions of other governments \u2013 including the US government \u2013 who have repatriated their nationals from North East Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Legal action charity Reprieve, along with NGOs such as Save the Children, are\u00a0campaigning for\u00a0\u200bBritish families\u00a0to be brought back to the UK.\u00a0\u200bBritish adults who have committed crimes should be prosecuted through the British courts\u200b, and children should be provided with the support they need to reintegrate into society.\u00a0Former MI6 Counterterrorism Director Richard Barrett\u00a0has argued\u00a0that it is more dangerous to leave adult Britons in North East Syria than to bring them back for prosecution, and that\u00a0it would be\u00a0 \u201cwrong to separate children from their mothers\u201d, urging the Government to solve this serious security problem and repatriate the small number of British families in the camp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A group of Senior Conservative MPs\u00a0recently wrote\u00a0to the UK Attorney General asking that British women and children currently detained in the camps be repatriated, pointing out that many of the women were trafficked into going to Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
