Andy Tsege has spent his whole life campaigning for Ethiopian democracy and human rights<\/h3>\n<p>He has spoken out about the Ethiopian regime\u2019s terrible human rights record in front of the US Congress and the European Parliament.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Andy was not even in Ethiopia when the regime sentenced him to death (he was living in London with his family).<\/h3>\n<p>This is known as an\u00a0<em>in absentia\u00a0<\/em>sentence \u2013 when someone is not even in the courtroom to defend themselves.\u00a0Ethiopia commonly uses\u00a0this\u00a0in retaliation for political opposition,\u00a0falling\u00a0far below even the most basic fair trial standards.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Father&#039;s Day Messages for Andy Tsege &amp; Boris Johnson\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/YEa-kkw3G78?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>3. The Ethiopian authorities resorted to kidnapping Andy from an international airport.<\/h3>\n<p>He was forced onto a plane and taken back to Ethiopia to face his death sentence. This was part of a brutal crackdown on journalists and political opponents.<\/p>\n<h3>4. It took two weeks for Ethiopian officials to admit that they had kidnapped Andy.<\/h3>\n<p>As soon as Andy\u2019s family learned of his disappearance, they came straight to Reprieve for help. For the next year, he was held in a secret prison and in solitary confinement.<\/p>\n<h3>5. The Ethiopian government paraded Andy on state TV<\/h3>\n<p>He showed signs of torture and screams can be heard in the background.<\/p>\n<h3>6.
