{"id":11352,"date":"2017-09-18T16:21:01","date_gmt":"2017-09-18T16:21:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.reprieve.org.uk\/?post_type=update&#038;p=11352"},"modified":"2020-05-29T15:19:18","modified_gmt":"2020-05-29T15:19:18","slug":"breaking-acquitted-four-years-facing-death-sentence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reprieve.org\/uk\/2017\/09\/18\/breaking-acquitted-four-years-facing-death-sentence\/","title":{"rendered":"BREAKING &#8211; acquitted after four years facing a death sentence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Maya Foa, Director of Reprieve<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"header_block\"><strong>We\u2019ve just received news from Egypt that Ibrahim Halawa has been acquitted at a mass trial, four years after he was arrested at a protest.\u00a0I wanted to share the incredible news as I know that so many people out there\u00a0have campaigned for his release and sent messages of support to help him get through this ordeal. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But today\u2019s verdict is long overdue. We must remember that this Dublin teenager was arrested for the &#8216;crime&#8217; of attending a protest. He was tortured, tried alongside adults in a shockingly unfair trial of nearly 500 people, and faced the death penalty if convicted.<\/p>\n<p>For years, these court proceedings \u2013 which were designed to punish political dissent \u2013 made a mockery of justice. And since President Sisi took power in 2014, we\u2019ve been tracking the dramatic rise in death sentences.\u00a0Thousands \u2013 including journalists, activists, and juveniles like Ibrahim Halawa \u2013 have been locked up for attending pro-democracy protests and face the death penalty.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reprieve.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/2014_08_15_PUB-Ibrahim-Halawa.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2370\" src=\"https:\/\/www.reprieve.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/2014_08_15_PUB-Ibrahim-Halawa.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We still have work to do &#8211; including making sure Ibrahim gets home to his family in Ireland \u2013 and there will be more to come as events unfold.<\/p>\n<p>But in nearly four years of fighting to secure Ibrahim\u2019s release, we\u2019ve never stopped and never given up &#8211;
