David is considered one of the most versatile British actors of his generation, having performed in an eclectic range of productions for film, television and stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Born in Liverpool, David left to study in London at RADA and upon graduation secured varied and challenging roles, which have continued into his long career. David can currently be seen starring in the British drama \u2018Britannia I\u2019 and \u2018Britannia II\u2019 on Sky. The first and second series of the show, both written by Jez Butterworth, are set in 43AD and explores the Roman Imperial Army on their return to crush the Celtic heart of Britannia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
2019 saw David play the role of David in \u2018The End of History\u2019 at the Royal Court in London, directed by John Tiffany. Prior to this David was on stage in the Bridge Theatre\u2019s production of \u2018Julius Caesar\u2019, directed by Nicholas Hytner. David took on the role of Mark Anthony alongside a cast that includes Ben Whishaw and Michelle Fairley. The play ran from 20th January to the 15th April 2018 and was broadcasted nationwide to a live audience on 22nd March 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
David took the lead role in TV mini-series \u2018The City and the City\u2019 where he played Inspector Tyador Borlu in the BBC adaptation of China Mieville\u2019s novel of the same name. With a cast that includes Lara Pulver and Danny Webber the fantasy drama is set to TX in April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 2016, audiences saw David star as the lead in BBC One\u2019s drama \u2018The Missing\u2019, alongside Keeley Hawes and Tcheky Karyo. The 8 part series follows the lives of \u2018Sam\u2019 and \u2018Gemma\u2019 (Hawes) after their daughter, who is missing for 11 years, resurfaces. 2016 also saw David star in thriller \u2018The Ones Below\u2019 alongside Cl\u00e9mence Po\u00e9sy, Stephen Campbell Moore and Laura Birn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
2015 saw David in \u2018The Driver,\u2019 a three part BBC drama series written by Danny Brocklehurst, produced by Jolyon Symonds and executive produced by David himself. He was also seen starring as \u2018The Governor\u2019 in the fifth series of the critically acclaimed and fan favourite \u2018The Walking Dead\u2019, along with starring in \u2018Extant\u2019 as the role of \u2018Tobias Shepherd\u2019 alongside Halle Berry which aired on CBS in the US. Early 2015 saw David in BBC\u2019s \u2018The 7.39\u2019 in the lead role of \u2018Carl Matthews,\u2019 alongside Sheridan Smith and Olivia Colman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
David returned to the stage in 2015 starring in \u2018Hangmen\u2019, directed by Matthew Dunster and written by Martin McDonagh. The play began with a successful run at the Royal Court Jerwood Theatre from September, transferring to the Wyndham\u2019s theatre in December. \u2019Hangmen\u2019 received the \u2018Best New Play\u2019 award at the prestigious Olivier Awards in 2016 as well as \u2018Best Play\u2019 at the Critics Circle Theatre Awards in 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
David has appeared in some of the most popular and critically acclaimed television dramas such as \u2018Our Mutual Friend\u2019, \u2018Clocking Off\u2019, \u2018Holding On\u2019 (which earned him a prestigious RTS nomination), the six part BBC political drama \u2018State of Play\u2019 (a role for which he received a BAFTA nomination), and one of Channel 4\u2019s most controversial dramas \u2018The Deal\u2019, in which he played \u2018Gordon Brown\u2019 (directed by Stephen Frears) for which he subsequently won an RTS Award for his depiction of Brown. In 2006, audiences saw \u2018David\u2019 in \u2018Viva Blackpool\u2019; a 90 minute programme for BBC1 based on his character in \u2018Blackpool\u2019, a hugely popular six-part BBC musical drama broadcast in October and November 2005. David received the Best Television Actor Award at the Arena Awards, whilst the series also received a prestigious Golden Globe Award nomination. Other television credits include \u2018The Hollow Crown: Richard II\u2019, \u2018True Love\u2019, \u2018Red Riding\u2019, \u2018Field of Blood\u2019 and \u2018South Riding\u2019 as well as \u2018Sleepyhead\u2019 and \u2018Scaredy Cat\u2019 \u2013 two films based on the hugely popular Mark Billingham\u2019s crime novels for Sky 1 in which he played the lead role of \u2018Tom Thorne\u2019, whilst he also served as an executive producer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His stage work included a number of productions with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National, as well as working with highly regarded stage directors including Adrian Noble, Deborah Warner and Declan Donnellan (who<\/p>\n\n\n\n
most famously directed him in the title role of \u2018Peer Gynt\u2019). David received fantastic reviews for his performance in Neil LaBute\u2019s \u2018In A Dark Dark House\u2019 at the Almeida Theatre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His accomplished television and stage performances brought him to the attention of the film world and has gone on to play roles in a range of films including \u2018Welcome to the Punch\u2019, \u2018Hilary & Jackie\u2019, \u2018Some Voices\u2019, \u2018Born Romantic\u2019, \u2018Captain Correlli\u2019s Mandolin\u2019, Miramax\u2019s \u2018Derailed\u2019, Stephen Woolley\u2019s \u2018Stoned\u2019, \u2018The Reaping\u2019 opposite Hilary Swank, \u2018The Waterhorse: Legend of the Deep\u2019, written by Terry George, \u2018The Other Boleyn Girl\u2019, based on the bestselling book by Philippa Gregory, Neil Marshall\u2019s \u2018Centurion\u2019 and Sam Taylor-Wood\u2019s \u2018Nowhere Boy\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In addition to his acting career, David has founded his own production company, Tubedale Films which co-produced Patrice Leconte\u2019s film, \u2018L\u2019Homme Du Train\u2019, starring Johnny Hallyday and Jean Rochefort. Tudedale Films has enabled David to branch out into directing; starting with shorts, David also directed the TV project \u2018Sweet Revenge\u2019 in which he was able to work with friend and fellow actor Paul McGann.
